The Best SEER Rating For An Air Conditioner

CategoriesTips

No, a SEER rating doesn’t have anything to do with steaks, but it does have everything to do with the efficiency of your air conditioner. The SEER rating of an air conditioning unit is essentially a performance rating that tells you how efficient it will be. The rating isn’t just a grading scale though and there’s a lot more to it than most people realize.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and it can be calculated very easily. You can calculate the SEER rating of your AC with the following equation:

In basic terms, a SEER rating is essentially the ratio of the cooling capacity of your air conditioner to how much power the unit requires to achieve that capacity. The higher the resulting rating is, the more efficient the unit is, because it has a higher output for the amount of energy used than a unit with a lower rating.

In the same way that it’s important to shop for a vehicle that gets good mileage, it’s important to get an AC unit with a high SEER rating. The money you save in the long run on your utility bills makes spending a bit more upfront, for a more efficient unit, worth it. For example, if you compare two air conditioning units with the same tonnage, but one has a SEER rating of 9 and the other has a SEER rating of 19, like the Daikin DX18TC, you’ll see a huge difference in utility costs. If you ran each unit for 1,000 hours at a rate of 13.4 cents per kilowatt-hour, the unit with a rating of 19 would cost you $254 to run whereas the unit with a rating of 9 would cost you $536.

When you consider the amount of money you can save by investing in an air conditioning unit with a high SEER rating, it’s easy to see why so many people are replacing their old units with newer more efficient models. Although it can seem financially overwhelming to replace your air conditioning unit, it doesn’t have to be. There are a number of financing options and rebates available to homeowners who want to replace their old unit with an air conditioner that has a higher SEER rating.
