You should never close a heating vent in your home as a way to save money. It will not make your heating system more efficient and could even cause damage, requiring you to call for furnace repair.
Why Closing a Heating Vent Will Not Save Money
The furnace in your home is a collection of parts working together to heat your home. The heating system is sized to keep the whole home comfortable and ducts are designed and installed to circulate air so that every part of the home is properly balanced. Closing a heating vent will not decrease the amount of heat that a furnace produces, it just prevents heat from entering all the rooms.
Closing a Heating Vent Can Cause Damage
Closing too many vents can actually restrict airflow in the heating system and cause potentially serious furnace problems. You could trip a high limit safety switch that can shut off the furnace, and result in short cycling. If this frequently happens this could cause the need for professional furnace repair.
Better Ways to Improve Efficiency
There are zoned heating options that safely—and efficiently—allow you to selectively heat certain areas of the home. You can also install a programmable thermostat that can automatically turn on and off the heating system, conserving energy when you’re not home. If your furnace is a decade or more older, upgrading to a new high-efficiency furnace can also help reduce monthly energy bills and will usually increase overall home comfort.
Please do not close a heating vent in order to save money on energy bills. You will likely not see any significant savings and you could actually damage your heating system and require extensive furnace repair.
