With the arrival of spring, many people are patiently waiting for their gardens to bloom and lawns to grow in. However, Canadians that suffer from seasonal allergies are busy stocking up on allergy medication and carefully monitoring the pollen count. Your home should be an escape from the allergens outside—but many people don’t realize that indoor air quality can actually be worse than outdoors.
Homes are built to be insulated and newer homes are extremely airtight. While this can increase efficiency, it can also cause problems with air quality. Without proper ventilation, stale air is recirculated and allergens can be distributed throughout the home.
There are a few ways to increase indoor air quality and provide relief from seasonal allergies:
Improve Ventilation – During the summer, we close windows and turn on air conditioners. Many people mistakenly believe that running their cooling system improves ventilation, but that’s not its purpose. A dedicated ventilation system, like a Heat recovery ventilator (HRV) or energy recovery ventilator (ERV) can drastically improve the home’s air quality.
Use the Right Filter – It’s important to check and change the air filter monthly, but it’s equally important to use the right product for your system and needs. Many allergy sufferers turn to HEPA grade filters to contain allergens in their homes. While these filters can trap the smallest contaminant, they’re not compatible with all AC units. In some instances, using the wrong filter can damage your whole system. If you’re unsure what is the best filter, contact HAMCO directly for some advice.
Schedule Regular Maintenance – An air conditioner should be undergoing annual inspection, tune-up and cleaning by a certified professional. This can help increase efficiency and reliability—but it can also help with allergy symptoms by helping to ensure the AC isn’t blowing dust and allergens through the system.
