Most homeowners won’t realize they need to call for air conditioner service until their system shuts down completely. The good news is, if you know the warning signs that indicate your system is malfunctioning, you can book a service appointment before it’s too late.
Hearing strange noises coming from your AC is almost always a sign that you need to book AC service. Strange noises are usually the result of a lack of lubrication, a damaged part, or a worn-out bearing. It’s important to contact your HVAC technician at the first sign of unusual noises because if left unrepaired, the issues that cause the sounds could cascade into a major problem. You can even hear noises on the outdoor compressor that may be high-pitched or sound like grinding, which also indicate that you should shut the unit off and call for a service.
Increased Utility Bills
It’s normal to notice a slight increase in your utility bills from year to year as the price per kilowatt-hour increases, but exponential increases beyond that could be a sign that you need to book AC service. If your bills are beginning to increase as a result of AC usage it could mean that your system’s efficiency is declining due to any number of damaged or malfunctioning components.
In some cases, there will be visual indicators that there is a leak in your refrigerant line, like pools of refrigerant around your air conditioner, but minor leaks can be harder to detect. One sign to watch out for is the temperature of the air coming through your vents. If your air conditioner suddenly isn’t able to cool your home like it used to, it could be a sign that your system has a refrigerant leak. Another thing to keep track of is if the unit is running nonstop. If you find that your AC seems to be always running, but the temperature never seems to be dropping, or is getting even higher, you may also have a leak. Never attempt to locate or repair a refrigerant leak by yourself, as the refrigerant can be dangerous and highly pressurized. If you notice these symptoms, shut the unit off and contact HAMCO to arrange a service call.
Although water pooling around your furnace would be hard to miss, it definitely shouldn’t be ignored. Puddles of water around your furnace during the summertime could be the result of two major issues. It could be due to your coil freezing up from a lack of flow caused by a dirty filter or blocked vents, or there could be a leak in your refrigerant lines. Regardless of what the cause is, you should shut off your system immediately and book an AC service appointment right away.
