Air Conditioner Malfunctioning

Reasons Your Air Conditioner Is Malfunctioning

CategoriesNews / Tips

Ontario summers are notoriously brutal when it comes to the heat. Cities like Hamilton and Toronto tend to turn into an oven in July and August, making you desperate to escape the heat and hide in the cool air until October. While we’re experiencing the dog days of summer, the last thing we want to encounter is a malfunctioning air conditioner. Maybe your AC is only performing in intervals, or it’s not working powerfully enough, or maybe it’s not running altogether; in any case, here are some reasons that you might be having trouble with your air conditioning unit.

Dirty Condenser Coils
Condenser coils are the part of the air conditioning unit that expels the hot air from your house in order for it to be replaced with cold air. At times, especially when living in a city, the condenser coils can collect dirt, dust, and grime from the air and the elements, making it more difficult for the unit to expel heat, thus having to work harder to do the same job and eventually worsening the quality of the entire system. Scheduling yearly preventative maintenance will help to keep your system clean and running smoothly.

Clogged Drains
When removing heat from the air, your AC unit is also removing condensation. In a working air conditioning system, the water drains through the coil (located above the furnace) and is sent down a drain, but in a malfunctioning air conditioner, at times the drain may clog and back up the system with water. This is a pretty serious problem, if not attended to, as excess water can be backed up into the furnace which could cause a malfunction. If the water reaches the walls near or around the furnace unnoticed, it could lead to the potential growth of mold. Operating a dirty or clogged air conditioner will have the system breaking down without warning, leaving you needing an emergency repair specialist.

Quality of Installation
Sometimes, you can do everything right in regards to the care and maintenance of your system, and still find that you have a malfunctioning air conditioner on your hands. Often, when you’ve worked hard to take care of your system and it still isn’t working properly, it’s not your fault but the fault of the company who installed the unit.

From day one, the installation of your air conditioner sets the foundation for the rest of its life, and if the system is installed unevenly, in an unfit area, or with poor connection to the home, no amount of proper maintenance will make it live up to its potential. This is why choosing who installs your air conditioner is a key part of keeping your AC functional and saving you money in the long run. At HAMCO, we take pride in being air conditioning and furnace experts, making sure that every system is installed carefully and with care. Proper installation is the first step to ensuring a healthy, long-lasting air conditioner.
