Improve Your Indoor Air Quality at Home During Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month

CategoriesTips

May is Asthma and Allergy Awareness Month, which means it’s the perfect time to identify and remedy any factors that aggravate your asthma and allergy symptoms. These days our homes are tightly sealed, which means many of the contaminants that enter our homes get trapped inside, but these tips can help you improve the air quality in your home.

Filters
If you’re looking to improve the air quality in your home, your air filter is your first line of defence, and you should treat it as such. It’s important to change your filters at least every 90 days or less to ensure they can effectively remove all of the contaminants from your household air. Neglecting to maintain and change your filters jeopardizes the quality of your air because as they get caked with debris it can force smaller particles that normally would be trapped through.

You should also consider what type of air filter you are using if you want to improve the air quality in your home. There are several grades of air filters to choose from, but HEPA filters are the most effective, and they can trap more than 99% of airborne contaminants.

Housekeeping
One of the most effective ways to improve the air quality in your home is to improve the overall cleanliness of your home. It’s important to dust and vacuum your home regularly, but especially in the spring after your windows and doors have been closed tight for a couple of months. Mopping is the best way to keep the dust that has settled from becoming airborne because the moisture traps the dust and allergen particles. While you’re taking care of your spring cleaning, you should also take some time to dust and clean the covers on your vents and registers.

Maintenance
Over time dust and debris can settle inside your HVAC systems, and you’ll need a licensed technician to clean the intricate mechanisms within your unit. If there’s dirt and debris inside your system it can negatively impact its efficiency as well. An HVAC technician can clean out all of the grime and tune your system up so it can run at its best and provide you with clean air all season long.
