HVAC Home Addition

Do I Need a New HVAC System for a Home Addition?

CategoriesTips

These days, many homeowners are choosing to add additions to their homes rather than moving because of the over-saturated market, and once you have a sense of community, it’s hard to leave. One common question that arises during most home addition projects is whether or not you’ll need to replace your current HVAC system.

The answer to this question really depends on the size of the home addition or additions you’re adding, as well as the capacity of your current HVAC system.

You’re In The Clear
In most cases, if your home addition simply involves expanding a pre-existing room, you won’t need to upgrade your current HVAC system. There are different sizes of HVAC systems, and they are designed to accommodate different spatial ranges, which means that they are usually slightly oversized for the space they are in. As long as your system isn’t undersized, you should be able to continue to use it once your home addition is complete.

Time For An Upgrade
Unfortunately, if you are adding new rooms as part of your home addition, you will need to install ductwork to supply the room with air, and it will need to be tied into your existing ductwork. Extending your ductwork during your home addition project will require your HVAC system to work harder, and if it isn’t powerful enough to provide that extra supply, you’ll need to upgrade your system. A licensed HVAC specialist will be able to inspect your system and evaluate whether or not you’ll need to replace it. You should also consult an HVAC specialist to help you plan your ductwork extension to ensure the layout is as efficient as possible.

Consider Your Options
If your current HVAC system isn’t adequate enough to supply your new home addition, replacing it isn’t your only option. Ductless mini-splits can be seamlessly installed in most spaces because the only structural aspect of the installation is creating a hole a few inches in diameter in your wall to run piping from your outdoor unit to the indoor units. These systems are extremely energy efficient, and their zoned cooling capabilities allow you to independently adjust the temperature in the rooms that house the indoor units.
