Struggling with uneven heating in your home can be frustrating, but the answer isn’t to put on or remove woolly socks and warm sweaters as you move around your home. Uneven home heating is a common problem for homeowners across Canada, so we’ve broken down the causes and provided some solutions to help you limit your indoor wardrobe changes and improve your home comfort.
Causes of Uneven Home Heating
Several factors could be causing your heating system to heat your home unevenly. One of the most common causes of uneven heating is not having enough return air ducts in your home, because your furnace needs an adequate supply of incoming air to produce enough warm air to evenly heat your home. An improperly sized HVAC system could also be the reason you have uneven heating throughout your home because it would affect the velocity at which the return air reaches your furnace and gets dispersed around your home. There are countless reasons your heating system could be producing uneven heat ranging from one or more components in your unit being damaged to something as simple as the wrong type of filter being used. Regardless of the cause, contacting a licensed HVAC technician is the easiest way to find the root of the problem so you can resolve it.
Simple Solutions to Resolve Uneven Home Heating
Luckily in most cases, uneven heating can be remedied with one of these simple solutions.
- Ductless Heating: Unfortunately, some rooms are just difficult to heat due to a lack of insulation, or large windows, or an addition that is not part of the existing heating system’s ductwork. A ductless heating system can give those hard to heat rooms around your home the added boost of warmth they need without overheating the rest of your home.
- Change Filters: Dirty filters restrict airflow, which can cause a wide variety of HVAC problems including uneven heating throughout your home, so make sure you change them at least every 90 days.
- Turn on the Fan: Your furnace relies on a fan to disperse the warm air it produces throughout your home. The fan can be controlled independently in most cases, so double check your thermostat to see that it is turned on if you’re experiencing uneven heating issues. You may want to run the fan independently for an hour or so to help move the air around.
- Service: We could write a book on troubleshooting tips, but the reality is unless you have the knowledge that a licensed technician does, these tips will only get you so far. Calling an HVAC professional to service your home comfort systems is the best way to solve any problems you’re having with them.
