Maintenance Tips for your Ductless Mini Split System

CategoriesProducts / Tips

Ductless mini split systems are a great way to keep your home comfortable all year long, whether you’re using them as your primary HVAC system or to supplement your other systems. Their seamless operation and compact design make it easy to take them for granted, but there are a couple of ductless system maintenance tips you should follow to ensure your system is running at its best.

Keep the Outside Clean
Our first ductless system maintenance tip falls into the category of good housekeeping. It’s important to regularly clean the dust and debris off of the outside of your system with a damp cloth or gentle cleaner so that it doesn’t work its way inside the unit. If dust and debris collect inside your unit, over time they can compact around the mechanisms inside and impede their functions, which could lead to a malfunction.

Give it Space
This ductless system maintenance tip is simple, but it will greatly increase the lifespan and efficiency of your unit over time. Ductless systems don’t require a lot of space to operate smoothly, but it’s important not to obstruct them in any way that might impede their airflow. Make sure your unit has at least four feet of clearance in every direction, aside from the wall, to keep it running at its best.

Remove Filters
Just like traditional HVAC systems, regularly cleaning the filter is one of our number one maintenance tips to keep your ductless system running efficiently. All you need to do is remove them, vacuum them or gently wipe them down with a clean, slightly damp cloth, and then let them dry. Although the filters are reusable, over time they can become damaged and difficult to clean effectively, so it’s a good idea to take note of their condition. Based on use, you may need to check them as often as once per month.

Check for Snow and Ice
It’s important to clean the snow and ice off of the outdoor portion of your ductless system during winter if you are using it to heat your home. Snow and ice can cause severe damage to your unit if left for long periods of time, so regularly check the system for frozen obstructions during the winter and gently remove them.

Schedule Professional Maintenance
While these ductless system maintenance tips are a great way to keep your system running efficiently and avoid costly repairs, the best way to ensure you are getting peak performance from your unit is to schedule annual maintenance. A licensed technician will clean your unit’s internal mechanisms and inspect the system for damaged or worn parts that should be replaced or repaired.
