What Can You Do Before Calling For Cooling Service?

CategoriesTips

Is your air conditioner not cooling your home like it used to? It’s always best to leave AC maintenance and repairs to the professionals, but you can safely check a few problem areas off the list before calling in the experts at HAMCO to complete your cooling service.

Does the AC Unit Have Power?
The best place to start troubleshooting any problem is at the source. Before you call for AC service, make sure your unit has power. Check to see that the circuit breaker is in the on position and while you’re there take a look at the fuse to make sure that it hasn’t blown. Many homes also have an outdoor shut off switch, in a metal box beside the unit, so take a quick look outside to make sure that it wasn’t turned off for some reason.

Is Your Thermostat Summer-Ready?
Thermostats make controlling your home comfort system a breeze, but they’re also responsible for many simple cooling system issues. The most common issue homeowners overlook is forgetting to switch their thermostat from HEAT to COOL at the start of the summer. Another simple thing you can check while inspecting your thermostat settings is the preset temperature. The temperature needs to be set below the current temperature in the house to trigger your AC system. It’s good practice to check the batteries in your thermostat as well because most models won’t function if there is a low battery warning. Before you call a professional to service your cooling system, make sure your thermostat is set up for the summer weather.

Have You Changed Your Furnace Filter Recently?
When the summer heat hits, homeowners forget the furnace and focus all of their attention on the air conditioner. The problem with this is your furnace filter is responsible for filtering the air coming from your air conditioner as well. So before you call for cooling service because your air conditioner isn’t working, make sure the filter is clean and replace it if necessary. Filters should be changed at least every 90 days, but the frequency changes based on how many people and pets are in the home. If your air filter is clogged and dirty, the cold air can’t flow quickly enough to cool your home, leading many people to believe their AC unit is broken.
