Easy Fixes for Common Air Conditioner Problems
If you are having problems with your air conditioner, there are a few things you can try before calling for AC service.
Sometimes, fixing your air conditioner problem is as easy as changing out some batteries or checking the settings. Any time you have an AC issue, always check the thermostat first.
- Check and change the batteries if needed. Many thermostats won’t work with a Low Battery warning. If you don’t remember the last time you changed your batteries, it’s probably a good idea to change them.
- Ensure the thermostat is set to COOLING, and the temperature is set to a few degrees below the current indoor temperature.
Some homeowners forget to check and change the furnace filter during the warmer months. A clogged filter can create a number of problems with the furnace fan and can cause serious damage to the furnace, coil and outdoor unit. Before calling for AC service, always take the time to replace the filter.
Check the Condenser
Head outside and clean around the condenser to remove any overgrowth. There needs to be sufficient airflow around the outdoor unit, most manufactures recommend 18-24 inches of clearance around the unit. Sometimes, leaves or brush can crowd the equipment and cause an issue with airflow. If you have a cover please take the cover off prior to starting the system for the first time.
Ensure There’s Power to the System
If the air conditioner won’t turn on at all, power might not be reaching the system. Check the AC switch and ensure that a breaker hasn’t been tripped. Most AC units also have an outdoor disconnect, ensure that the cover is on and this is also in the on position.
If you’ve gone through the above fixes, and you’re still having air conditioner problems, it’s time to call for professional service.
