A cooling system is a financial investment and needs to be properly maintained to ensure its longevity. After servicing countless air conditioners, we sometimes come across an AC problem or breakdown that could have been easily prevented, but the homeowner wasn’t aware that they were damaging the unit by their actions.
- Running the air conditioner with a cover
If you use an AC cover to protect the system from harsh winter conditions, please make sure to remove it before turning on the air conditioner. Leaving the cover on could overheat the system and burn out delicate components.
- Letting leaves and debris pile up
Similar to the AC cover, garden debris can quickly pile up around the outdoor condenser and restrict proper airflow. If left too long, leaves, twigs and even shrubs can cause overheating and require a call for AC repair. Make sure to regularly check the outdoor unit and keep the area around it clear of any debris.
- Running the air conditioner with a dirty furnace filter
Some homeowners forget to check and change the furnace filter during the summer months. Running an air conditioner with a clogged air filter can cause a number of damaging air conditioner problems and could lead to an emergency repair call. To ensure optimal performance, check the filter monthly and replace as needed.
- Drastically changing the temperature
If you’re constantly adjusting the thermostat and turning the AC system on and off multiple times per day, you could actually be damaging it and decreasing its lifespan. Programmable thermostats can help regulate the indoor temperature without straining the system.
- Skipping annual maintenance
You should be scheduling a yearly AC tune-up and not just calling your cooling company when a repair’s needed. Preventative maintenance can improve home comfort, increase efficiency and decrease the chance of a midsummer breakdown.
