Protect Your AC During Home Renovations

Planning a home renovation for the long weekend? Before you get started, you should take the proper steps to protect your AC so it won’t get damaged during your renovation project. We’ve outlined five tips you can follow to ensure your home improvement project doesn’t negatively affect your air conditioner’s performance.

1. Turn off HVAC System
Turning off your HVAC system will help prevent the circulation of air throughout your home, meaning that any dust, dirt and debris from the renovation project won’t get sucked into your ductwork. While it may be tempting to run the AC on hot days, turning it off will go a long way in keeping dirt from entering the system and clogging the air filter.

2. Cover Vents and Registers
Another good way to protect your AC during home renovations is to cover the vents and registers around the area being renovated. The dust and debris produced during major home improvement projects can have detrimental effects on your HVAC system, so it’s important to stay one step ahead by sealing off any vents or registers that will be exposed to the work area.

3. Maintain a Clean Space
It’s a good idea to keep the work area as clean as possible during your renovation project by dusting and vacuuming regularly. Using a plastic tarp to section off the work area is a great way to prevent dust and debris from being distributed through your home and getting sucked into the air filter. Another way to stay on top of the mess is to do any sawing and sanding work in the garage or outside the home.

4. Change Air Filter
One of the first things you should do after completing your home renovation project is change the air filter. Not only will a clogged air filter restrict airflow and not be able to perform effectively, the air in your home will be filled with dust and contaminants produced by the renovation.

5. Schedule AC Maintenance
To give yourself even more peace of mind, schedule routine AC maintenance with a certified cooling specialist after finishing your renovation to ensure your HVAC system wasn’t damaged in any way.
