Please be Cautious of Door-to-Door Furnace Scams

CategoriesNews

HAMCO Heating & Cooling Ltd. is reminding all homeowners in the Hamilton area to be cautious about door-to-door furnace scams. If someone comes to your door and asks to inspect your furnace, please don’t let them in! The recent news story about a Toronto man with a mental disability being tricked into signing expensive heating and cooling contracts for everything from maintenance plans to HEPA filters proves that this is still a problem everyone needs to be on the watch for.

How the Scam Works
There are three most common types of furnace scams that can occur—one that tries to replace your heating system, one that tries to get you to switch your energy supplier and one that tries to sign you up for a free energy audit.

Furnace Replacement: Often these scammers will try to make their way into your home and ask to inspect your heating system. If allowed in, they will perform an “inspection” and will report finding serious problems with your furnace. They will then try to get you to sign a contract to rent a furnace from them at a significantly inflated cost.

Switch Energy Supplier: Another common scam is someone coming to your home claiming to be from your energy company. They will request access to your furnace to inspect it and will usually ask to see your utility bills. If provided, they will use aggressive sales tactics to get you to sign with their energy services—which will be much higher than what you are currently paying.

Free Energy Audit: The scam starts with a random phone call late at night and over a free energy evaluation of your home. If you decide to set this up, the energy evaluation will soon turn into a sales call for new energy star furnace, water heater and even an air conditioner.

Protect Yourself
The best way to protect yourself against a door-to-door furnace scam is to never sign anything. These scams work by using high-pressure sales tactics, but make sure that you never sign a contract on the spot. If you have any questions about your furnace, always call a trusted heating and cooling company. Remember, no legitimate business will show up at your door unscheduled or attempt to contact you randomly in the middle of the evening to try to gain access to your home.
