Pumpkin Carving Tips

CategoriesNews

Halloween is just a few days away, and it’s the perfect time to start carving your pumpkin. Follow our pumpkin carving tips to keep your jack-o-lantern fresh for Halloween.

Pick the Perfect Pumpkin
Pumpkin picking can be a science, but with these tips, you’ll be able to find the perfect gourd for your needs! Softer pumpkin flesh is easier to carve, so make sure to check the colour of the pumpkin rind — a lighter colour rind usually indicates softer pumpkin flesh. Also, make sure to pick up your pumpkin. You’re looking for a light, hollow pumpkin. This’ll make it easier to carve and there are fewer insides to scoop out! Pass on any pumpkins with cuts, bruises or soft spots to prevent your jack-o-lantern from rotting right after it’s carved.

Don’t Carve Too Early
Remember that pumpkins are a food-source and won’t last forever. Depending on how you cut your pumpkin and the climate, your pumpkin will probably only last 24 – 72 hours before it really starts deteriorating. To increase its lifespan, keep the stem intact (cut a hole in the back for the light source), keep the carved pumpkin cool and ensure all the seeds and strings get scooped out.

Use a Template
If you want to try your hand at a more complicated carve than the traditional jack-o-lantern pattern, there are thousands of printable templates you can find online. To transfer the pattern, tape the paper to your pumpkin and use a nail to trace the pattern onto your pumpkin. Just remember that the more intricate the design, the longer it’ll take to carve!

Remember — don’t throw away the pumpkin seeds you scoop out! Spread them out on a tray and bake for about 30 minutes at 150° F. You can top the seeds with anything from salt to cinnamon-sugar — the possibilities are limitless!
