Protect Your Air Conditioner Condenser During a Summer Storm
Your air conditioner condenser (the big outdoor unit outside your home) is tough and built to withstand a lot of what Mother Nature throws its way. However, we occasionally get a serious summer storm that even your air conditioner condenser needs help getting through.
Wind
Ensuring that your air conditioner condenser is properly secured needs to be one of your top priorities as we enter summer storm season. Yes, the condenser is heavy, but even if it doesn’t get very far, it can still suffer serious damage and costly repairs.
Lightning
During severe stormy weather, lightning can pose a risk for your air conditioner. A direct lightning hit to your condenser will destroy internal electronics, but the risk of a direct hit runs low. During a storm, turn off your unit to protect it from any electrical surges and prevent any other electrical damage to your home comfort systems.
**If your air conditioner has suffered an electrical surge or lightning hit, do not turn on the unit! Contact HAMCO Heating & Cooling Ltd. as soon as possible and our professionals will carefully assess the system and prevent further damage.
Airborne Objects
As wind speeds pick up during storms, airborne objects become a significant threat to your air conditioner condenser. Flying debris—including tree branches, shingles and even outdoor furniture—can hit your unit and cause system damage. Your condenser may even experience damage from excess rainfall or mud spraying into the unit. Ensure you’ve inspected your unit after a storm and clear away any surrounding objects that may hit the unit. A visual inspection may find some damaged components or lots of dirt build up that may require a cleaning.
We can’t control Mother Nature and the severity of a summer storm, but there are steps we can take to protect our home comfort investments and ensure our air conditioners suffer the least amount of damage in any case.
