Summer Air Conditioner Prep

CategoriesTips

Our spring weather has been all over the map this year—one day is extremely hot while the very next day is ice cold, leaving people searching for their toques. We were even subjected to a week of rain and some of the worst flooding in recent history. Lost in the mess of spring weather, many homeowners have delayed their summer air conditioner prep. Make sure that you take some time this week to inspect your air conditioner and ensure it’s ready for the sure-to-be-hot summer ahead!

Start the Season with New Filters!
Air filters are an important component of air conditioners and oftentimes the most neglected. Start the summer right with a new air filter and don’t forget to inspect filters monthly and change when needed.

Check the Coils!
The condenser is the outdoor part of your AC unit and its coils inside can become dirty and clogged throughout the winter when it’s not in use. As part of your annual summer air conditioner prep, do a visual inspection of the unit and ensure there isn’t any build up or debris. You can easily see the condenser coil and notice if dirt is collecting on its fins. If your unit resembles the one in the picture above, it needs a coil cleaning. Always ensure the power is off before cleaning. You can use a soft brush or vacuum to gently clean the coils while being mindful not to bend or damage the delicate pieces. If you prefer to have a professional perform this service we can certainly do this for you.

Disperse the Debris!
While you’re outside cleaning the coils, take some time to inspect the area around the condenser. Ensure any leaves or branches that accumulated during the fall and winter are removed and cut any live shrubbery, weeds or vines that have grown too close to the condenser and could possibly pose a safety hazard (or attract pests).

Schedule Your Yearly Service!
The best way to get your summer air conditioner prep underway is to schedule your yearly AC maintenance. During one of our Annual Multi Point Maintenance Appointments, a licensed HAMCO technician will ensure that your air conditioner is functioning efficiently and safely. Additionally, this is the time that homeowners can ask any questions they may have about their home comfort system. Our technicians can discuss any potential problems they see—catching them early before they turn into costly AC repair bills.

Contact us today to schedule your annual maintenance appointment and be ready for the first real heat wave of the summer!
