Cleaning Your HRV Filter or ERV Filter

CategoriesTips

Your HVAC system is a big investment, and needs to be treated as such! Proper annual maintenance of your home comfort systems is always recommended and should be done by a certified professional. If your home has an HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) or an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilator) it should also be maintained. These units contain a core that should be clean annually and two pre filters that should be cleaned 3-4 times a month. Cleaning your HRV filter or ERV filter will ensure that it will minimize any trouble in the future due to grime build up.

Your HRV or ERV works to supply your home with clean air by exhausting the stale air from inside outdoors while simultaneously gathering energy from the exhausted air. An HRV unit transfers heat within your home, while the ERV transfers both heat and moisture. By keeping your filters properly cleaned, you are ensuring that your system will provide better ventilation for the air within your home and improve the indoor air quality.

As your HRV filter or ERV filter are essentially air-to-air exchangers, we know that they can get extremely dirty from continuously filtering the air entering and exiting your home. By ensuring that your filters are clean, you’ll notice that the efficiency of your unit will significantly improve and in turn reduce the amount of your monthly utility bill!

Cleaning your filters isn’t very hard– once you’ve turned off your unit and opened it up, the filters essentially need to be slid out of the their designated spots and washed with warm, soapy water. Once they’re clean and dry, you can slide them back into their slots and turn your unit back on, good to go! Always make sure to reference the owner’s manual for your unit for instructions regarding the best solutions and methods for cleaning the HRV filter or ERV filter.

It’s important to remember to never use a pressure washer on your filters to get rid of any grime. A pressure washer can easily damage the filters and force you to buy new ones when you more than likely don’t need to.
